New Wyeth headquarters launched

“This investment of €5 million and the creation of 24 new jobs is a demonstration of our confidence in the strength of the Irish economy,” said Wyeth Ireland’s General Manager, Emmet Browne at the official opening of the company’s new corporate headquarters at Plaza 254 in Blanchardstown Corporate Park 2. The complex will also support the creation of four new departments, namely medical, regulatory, corporate affairs and operations and quality.Minister for Justice Brian Lenihan TD with Emmet Browne, General Manager, Wyeth Ireland at the opening of the new company HQ in Blanchardstown Corporate Park

“The pharmaceutical industry has played a significant if little-recognised role in the creation of Ireland’s current economic success,” Mr. Browne continued. “This country is now the largest net exporter of pharmaceuticals in the world and the current climate indicates this will continue.

“Our move to Ballycoolin is as a result of our continued growth as an independent affiliate. In addition, the creation of the new departments including Medical and Regulatory means that we can fast track the launch of many new and innovative products currently at various stages in our other four plants in Ireland.

“The company is now ideally placed to consolidate its position with both the broadest research platform and the best pipeline in the industry.”

In total, Wyeth Ireland employs over 3,000 people, including nearly 1,300 at the €1.8 billion Biotech Campus in Grange Castle in Clondalkin, the largest such facility in Europe. Internationally, Wyeth is the tenth largest pharmaceutical company in the world, employing 50,000 people in over 100 countries with net revenues of over $20.4 billion in 2006.

Minister Brian Lenihan, who officiated at the launch, was in nostalgic mood, as he recalled that the area was a wasteland favoured by courting couples twenty years ago, though he stressed his lack of involvement in any such nocturnal activities! He did however acknowledge the role of the pharmaceutical industry in Ireland in general and in Dublin 15 in particular, paying tribute to the huge payroll generated by the high degree of investment initiated by companies like Wyeth. “The Government has a commitment to maintain the current rate of corporate tax to ensure that Ireland remains competitive internationally,” he said. “It is a policy Dr. Paisley would love to adopt but he is hamstrung by the British Government.

“West Dublin in recent years has seen huge housing growth and a huge degree of investment and when the toll bridge is removed from the M50 and the new Metro comes on line, we will have the infrastructure here to support this.”

The Minister went on to praise the open-plan style of the offices which encourage old differences of employers and employees to be eroded in a camaraderie of common goals. With plans for a gymnasium on site and the hi-spec, user-friendly offices, he was pleased to endorse Wyeth’s commitment to the local and national economy.
