Huntstown
young people design calendar
In
an innovative approach to introduce young people to the working of the
Huntstown Community Youth Project (HYCP) local youth officer, John Kingsley
Onwumereh recently came up with a most unusual idea to get local young
people to examine their local community.
6th class pupils in the local Sacred Heart National School were invited
to enter a competition to design a calendar for the area under the heading
of ‘what I like about my community’. The pupils were asked
to submit a picture depicting some positive aspect of their local community
such as local facilities, the environment, local activities or such
like.
According to John “over 120 entries were received and the final
submissions showcase some brilliant art works which vividly capture
the young people’s intention and imagination”.
“The aim of the project was to introduce the young people to the
work of the Youth project in the hope that they will join it in the
coming year when they finish primary school,” said John.
The project is sponsored by Blanchardstown Area Partnership, County
Dublin VEC and Clonsilla Credit Union. Thanks to this sponsorship the
calendar has been professionally printed and copies are available from
Huntstown Community Centre and Blanchardstown Youth service on Main
Street, Blanchardstown.
The six young people whose artwork features on the calendar were presented
with prizes and certificates for their efforts at the recent launch
of the new calendar in Huntstown Community Centre.
The winning artists were Lauren Clarke, Jessica Brennan, Laura Somerville,
Hayley Haughey, Sophie McEntee and Mac Mihaljevic.
