Building
a well in Ghana
Community Voice previously reported the work of local
man John Todd in visiting Ghana as part of an environmental project
run by Earthwatch and his employer Cadbury-Schweppes.
During his two week visit last year, John who is an engineer, undertook
research on a number of environmental projects aimed at assisting the
local population whose main livelihood comes from growing and harvesting
cocoa.
He was particularly struck by the lack of facilities in the area he
visited. “All the things we take for granted – electricity,
running water etc – were totally absent. The poverty was alarming.”
On his return John organised a fund-raising project for the area he
had visited and to date over €3,100 has been raised for the village
of Adjeikrom, where he carried out his research project.
Speaking to Community Voice he thanked everyone “who
gave donations, purchased tickets, attended a table quiz or in any way
helped to make the fundraiser such a success.”
According to John “it takes about €2,400 to put in a well
and pump, to provide clean water for local residents. Putting in a well
doesn’t just mean that local people will have clean water available
locally, it also means that children who spend time walking kilometres
to fetch water can now attend school more frequently.”
