Playing
chess in Huntstown
The
game of chess is recognised as the oldest game of skill in the world
and there are records of the game being played in Persia (now Iran)
as long ago as the 8th century.
When Moorish armies invaded Persia in the 8th century they learned the
game and when they later invaded Spain they brought the game with them.
From Spain it spread throughout Europe and one might suggest that it
eventually reached Huntstown.
One of the surprisingly popular activities now being developed in Huntstown
Community Centre is in fact chess with a new children’s chess
club taking place in the centre every Wednesday evening. Organised by
the centre’s activities co-ordinator, Diane Treanor, the club
is attracting members from the age of 6 years and upwards.
Any young people interested in learning to play chess or developing
their existing skills are invited to drop down to Huntstown Community
centre any Wednesday evening between 6 and 7 p.m.
Further information is available from the centre (tel. 822 0847).
