Hiking
club seeks members
With the coming of Spring the days are starting to get longer and thoughts
are starting to turn to the outdoors again.
One local organisation that has proved very popular for those seeking
outdoor activity in recent years is the Foróige Dublin 15 Hikers'
Club. Operated by local adult volunteers and supported by Blanchardstown
Youth Service the Dublin 15 Hikers Club caters for young people aged
between the ages of 12 and 18.
According to youth officer, Saoirse Prendergast. “the hiking club
is a fantastic way for young people to visit and explore natural areas
in Dublin and the surrounding counties. You will learn how to map read
and will know what equipment you need to bring for a safe enjoyable
trip.”
One interesting benefit mentioned by Saoirse was the relief of stress
for young members. “previous club members have praised the hiking
trips as a great way to get fit and relieve exam stress,” she
said.
The first trip for 2008 is being planned for February. With the leadership
of Michael Walsh - a qualified hill guide - the correct equipment and
a planned route an enjoyable and energetic day is promised.
Anyone interested in joining should attend a registration evening on
Wednesday 6th February at 6 p.m. in Blanchardstown Youth Service on
Main Street. With only twelve places available early booking is advisable
to avoid disappointment.
The club is also looking for the services of a female adult volunteer
(aged 18 or over) with previous hiking experience.
Anyone interested is asked to contact Saoirse Prendergast tel. 01 821
2077.
