Women’s Refuge funding approved

Finally after a number of false starts, work on the new Blanchardstown Women’s Refuge is expected to commence next month after the approval by Fingal County Council of a loan of over €1.7m to the project. The site of the new Women’s Refuge between Blanchardstown Garda Station and Tractamotors

Members of the council, at its January meeting approved the application for financial assistance by Sonas Housing Association Limited.

Following much negotiation and correspondence between the various parties, the loan was approved by the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government on Christmas Eve and this approval opened the way for the county council to formally pass a motion making the finance available.

While the assistance is being given in the form of a loan, all repayments on the loan will be waived by the Council for as long as the terms and conditions of the mortgage agreement are complied with to the satisfaction of the Council. The Council will in turn be reimbursed by means of a capital grant for the full amount from the department.

The proposed development, for which received full planning approval was granted almost five years ago, will comprise four 2 bedroom apartments and four 1 bedroom apartments, a single storey administration and communal facilities building including a laundry, kitchen, dining and administration facilities as well as a play area and visitors room.

The new complex which should be completed by early 2009, will be located on a site owned by Fingal County Council beside Blanchardstown Garda Station.
