Co-located
hospitals
Mount
Carmel Medical (MCM), the private healthcare company tipped to develop
a private hospital on the grounds of Connolly Hospital in Dublin 15
is due to apply for planning permission for a €100 million co-located
hospital development in Sligo next month.
MCM, which is owned by property developer Gerry Conlan, is finalising
the project agreement for the 96-bed private hospital in the grounds
of Sligo General Hospital with the Health Service Executive (HSE).
The healthcare firm, which owns Sligo’s existing private hospital,
St Joseph’s in Garden Hill, is also reported to be close to finalising
a deal to build a private co-located hospital in Waterford.
As previously reported in Community Voice, the company
is reported to be the only remaining consortium negotiating for the
contract to build a co-located hospital on the grounds of Connolly Hospital
following the withdrawal of the Bernard McNamara led Synchrony consortium
from the negotiations last year. If MCM wins the Dublin 15 contract,
it will be the owner/operator of three of the state’s eight co-located
hospitals.
The controversial co-location initiative was originally put forward
by health minister Mary Harney as a way to free 1,000 beds in public
hospitals by transferring private patients to the private facilities.
In addition to the three co-located hospitals and St. Joseph’s
in Sligo, MCM also owns and operates Aut Even private hospital in Kilkenny
and Mount Carmel hospital in Churchtown.
The company is headed by Chief Executive Joe Kelly, a former Defence
Forces captain who managed the military hospital at the Curragh before
he retired from the army.
