Commuters
locked into rail station
While
the fear of being locked out of a railway station and missing your train
to work may be one that might occasionally trouble local commuters,
few, if any, would ever imagine that they might be locked into a railway
station and unable to get out to go to the office.
This is precisely what happened to about 40 local passengers on the
Clonsilla to Docklands rail service earlier this month when they were
locked into the Docklands station after an Irish Rail worker slept in.
The passengers on the 7.05a.m. train from Clonsilla arrived in the Docklands
station at 7.25 a.m. only to find that the station was still in darkness
and all the shutters and doors were locked.
When staff at the station arrived they were unable to open the shutters
because the employee who had the key had not woken up in time. A spokesperson
for the company explained that a young worker due to report for work
in the station at 6.45 a.m. had slept in and didn't wake up until 7.20
a.m.
He immediately rang his boss at Connolly station and a manager from
that station arrived 20 minutes later to open the station doors and
free the passengers.
Meanwhile the freezing passengers were allowed back into the train to
keep warm until they were “released” from the station.
Iarnród Éireann subsequently apologised for the incident.
