32A for Dublin screening

32A – the film featuring Castleknock Community College student Kerri Fleming – will get its first Dublin screening later this month as part of the Jameson International Film Festival. This follows on from its three performances at the Berlin Film Festival at the beginning of the month.Kerri Fleming

The film, which was shot in Donaghmede and Sligo and is set in Dublin in the 1970s, can best be described as a “Gregory’s Girl,” from a 13 year old girl’s perspective. The 32A of the title relates to the recurring theme of bra sizes!

Kerri auditioned for the part in the Irish Film Base in Temple Bar last summer after flying back from holidays to attend. “There were hundreds, maybe thousands, of people auditioning for it,” recalls Kerri. “Afterwards I didn’t hear anything for a while- you normally get call-backs – and assumed I hadn’t been successful.

“Then they rang, offering me the part of Mary.”

The film, which featured Aidan Quinn and was directed by his sister Marion, won the Best First Feature Trophy at the Galway Film Fleadh last year.

“It is wonderful news that we have been selected for inclusion in the upcoming Berlinale, one of the worlds leading film festivals,” says producer Tommy Weir. “It’s an honour and we're thrilled. We've long enjoyed visiting Berlin and are looking forward to be going with one of our own features. It's a great city and the Berlinale is probably our favourite big festival.”

The film will play three times at the Babylon Cinema and will compete for the 14 year old category at the festival. Following this, it will make its long-awaited debut in Dublin. For Kerri, though, it is a case of life getting in the way!

“I am unsure if I will be able to attend the Dublin screening,” she said. “The screening coincides with my mocks in the Leaving Cert, which will naturally take priority. However, it’s possible I might be able to stroll down for an hour or two.

“In fact, I have had to curtail my auditions this year because of my schoolwork.”

When not poring over books, Kerri has been looking forward to Moulin Rouge, which is being put on by the Kid Kast Theatre School and Agency at the Helix in June. Again, in a twist of fate, the production will take place towards the end of her Leaving Cert.

“I will probably end up learning my lines in the classroom and revising my schoolwork in the wings of the theatre!” she laughed.

Janey Productions’ “32A” plays the Cineworld on Parnell Street on Friday 22nd February at 18:20.

Tickets are €10.
