A galaxy of stars

Presumably if you surveyed eighty junior school children who had the opportunity to wish upon a star, the chances are that a sizable number would like to appear on a big stage in front of an audience.

There is apparently great excitement in the Corduff area at present as approximately eighty young singers, dancers and actors put the final touches to their sizzling variety show “Wish upon a star” which is set to take Draíocht by storm this month. Ranging in age from six to eight years, the pupils of St. Patrick’s Junior National School in Corduff have been rehearsing two nights a week since last October to make sure that the final product reflects their undoubted talents.

The show has been written by teachers Maria Fagan and Éadaoin Kelly who both have theatrical experience and the vast majority of the staff has helped out in some way, whether it has been costume design or set design or taking rehearsals. Parents also have thrown themselves into the production with abandon. With four separate themes running through the production – woodland, under the sea, city and school – the show promises to be a cornucopia of delight for young and old.

So why did the school decide to forego the usual school hall production and bring the show to the community in a large and modern theatre?

“Both Maria and Éadaoin have experience of musicals and dramas and they felt that the show would give the children a once in a lifetime opportunity to strut their stuff on a professional stage,” explains teacher, ticket agent, media contact and “general dogsbody” Barbara O’Neill. “Every child is in at least two scenes so it is all tremendously exciting for them. And us too of course!”

She was however hesitant in declaring that “Wish upon a star” would be an annual event at Draíocht. “Let’s just wait and see how this one goes!” she laughed. “This is a completely new experience for all of us. We’ve never tackled anything on this scale before so we will evaluate it after the final curtain.”

“Wish Upon a Star” by St. Patrick’s Junior National School, Corduff plays Draiocht’s main auditorium on Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th February at 7.30pm.

Tickets are €10 and €5.
