Winners of photo competition announced

The winning entries in the third annual Tom Shanahan Memorial Photography Competition were announced at a special event in Blanchardstown Library recently. The competition is open to all members of photography clubs in Fingal and drew a record 91 entries from across the length and breadth of the county.John Morgan from the St. Brigid’s Photo Club who came in third

Pride of place and winner of the Tom Shanahan Perpetual Trophy was Siobhan Quigley from Swords Photography Group. The trophy comes in the form of a bronze stag and was presented by Tom’s widow, Betty. Gerry Doyle from St. Benedict’s Photography Club claimed second place while it was a local lad, John Morgan from the St. Brigid’s Photo Club who came in third.

Yvonne Reilly the Senior Executive Librarian welcomed everyone to Blanchardstown library and the event was officially opened by the Deputy Mayor Councillor Peggy Hamill

Tom Shanahan was one of the founder members of St. Brigid’s and his enthusiasm infected many new recruits to photography. On his death in 2004, Fingal County Council, in recognition of his endeavours over many years, generously commissioned a bronze memorial in Tom’s memory which was presented to his widow Betty, who in turn presented it to St. Brigid’s Photo Club as a perpetual competition trophy. The Stag represents Tom’s love of nature and wildlife - and the habitat on the doorstep of his residence in the Phoenix Park, where he and his family lived for so many years.

“I am satisfied that we have established this trophy as a significant annual event in Fingal,” said club chairperson Michael McGee. “One of our innovations was that we specified that the photo frames had to be 16” x 20” rather than the usual 12” x 16.” We got a tremendous reaction to this on the night and it certainly gave the resulting exhibition a whole new dimension.

“I believe the standard of entries is the highest ever.”

The Tom Shanahan Memorial Photographic Exhibition 2008 runs at Blanchardstown Library until Wednesday 13th February.

Admission during normal Library opening hours is naturally free.
