New school now enrolling for September

Scoil Choilm, Dublin 15’s newest primary school may only be a few months old, but already it has developed a very clear vision of what it aims to achieve.Minister for Justice Brian Lenihan TD at the presentation of a cheque for €20,000 to Scoil Choilm pictured with Adedowale Adebisi, Chairperson of the parents’ association and school principal Treasa Lowe

The school, which was established under the temporary patronage of the Archbishop of Dublin to cater for children from Porterstown / Clonsilla who could not be accommodated in the existing schools in the area, will soon come under the patronage of the VEC as part of a new educational pilot scheme being developed in Dublin 15.

The school, was one of five in Dublin 15 included in the first phase of the Department of Education’s ‘2008 large scale building projects programme.’ The department has approved funding to relocate the school in a new 16 classroom building in Diswellstown / Porterstown area. School principal, Treasa Lowe is also hopeful that the school, currently based in temporary premises beside the grounds of Connolly hospital will be moving to its new location as early as next September.

“We currently have 82 junior infants and we hope that the school will grow and develop to cater for children from Junior Infants to sixth class in the coming years,” she said.

Explaining the ethos of the school, Ms. Lowe says “we are a multi-faith school and we welcome children of all faiths and none. However we will be teaching faith as part of our school curriculum.

“We are committed to a high standard of education and aim to provide a holistic education where each child is part of the school community,” she said.

Recently the school received a grant of €20,000 from the Department of Education & Science for the development of IT and library resources and equipment. According to Ms. Lowe, “this grant will be of great benefit in developing our educational resources. We will be using it to purchase new computers for the school as well as building up a decent library. We also hope to buy interactive white boards for the classrooms.

Ms. Lowe relishes the challenges of her new position. “I was previously the principal in Scoil Chnoc Liamhna [Knocklyon] for 13 years and was involved in setting that school up, so I look forward to the challenge of establishing Scoil Choilm also.”

Meanwhile parents wishing to enrol their children in Scoil Choilm for the coming year should apply to the school for application forms. Completed forms must be returned to the school before February 20th
.
Forms are available from the school (tel. 01 821 3352).

New school funding approved

As well as Scoil Choilm, four other schools have had their funding approved by the Department of Education & Science’s 2008 large scale building projects programme for rapidly developing areas.

The schools approved for funding are St Benedicts National School, Ongar (8 classroom school) and the new national school for Tyrellstown (8 classrooms).

Funding for two new VEC multi-faith primary schools has also been approved for the Phoenix park racecourse site (8 classrooms) and Phibblestown (8 classrooms).
