10 years for drugs and gun possession

A Bosnian man living in Castleknock has been jailed for 10 years by the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on drugs and gun charges. Zlatan Hodzic (26), from Castleknock Way, pleaded guilty to having cocaine, cannabis resin and a pistol in suspicious circumstances at his Castleknock home on January 10th, 2007. The court heard that the cocaine had a value of over €150,000 while the value of the cannabis resin was given as €5,800.

Sergeant Michael Kennedy told the court that gardaí, acting on confidential information, had searched Hodzic’s family home where they found cocaine and a pistol in an ESB box. They also found more cocaine, cannabis resin and a sum of cash in Hodzic’s bedroom.

Admitting responsibility for the drugs, Hodzic told gardaí he did not own them. He said he was holding the drugs under duress for another person and said he had bought the pistol in Lanzarote.

According to Sgt. Kennedy, Hodzic had 11 previous convictions for offences including assault, dangerous driving and violent behaviour.

Mr Erwan Mill-Arden SC, defending, said his client had come to Ireland as a child with his parents but had been introduced to drugs in secondary school and soon ran up debts to a drug dealer. He said that Hodzic was "tackling his addiction in a positive way" and had been giving clean urine samples since last June.

According to Mr Mill-Arden, Hodzic had not come to garda attention since this incident and he was hoping to rehabilitate himself and become a good citizen. He is in a relationship, has a child and has been working as a fork lift driver.

He said his client had been holding the drugs under threat and feared "a bullet in the head".

Judge Katherine Delahunt imposed the mandatory minimum sentence of ten years' imprisonment and set a review date in five years time.
