| Plunketts’ historic win St. Oliver Plunkett's/Eoghan Ruadh 2-13 St. Vincent's 1-7 Friday
25th January was something of a day for records. St. Oliver Plunketts
won the Dublin Senior Division 1 league for the first time. They also
merited a place in the record books based on the fact that it was only
last year that they won Division 2. No less than one third of the team
comprised members of the Brogan clan and the match was played under
lights on the superb new St. Brigids all weather pitch at Russell Park. A bitterly cold strong cross field wind threatened to mar the game and Plunketts opted to play with this wind in the first half building up a seven point lead by half time on a scoreline of 1-9 to 1-2. Plunketts made the stronger start and with Bernard Brogan at the top of his form in the left corner, they quickly started notching up the points. Captain Gareth Smith also lead by example kicking a brace of quality long distance points in the first quarter. However in the 13th minute goalkeeper Philip Brogan slipped while kicking the ball out. Vincent’s Dublin star, Mossie Quinn gratefully accepted the gifted ball and who soloed through and tapped the ball to the Plunketts net. However Plunketts responded positively to this potential setback with points from Bernard Brogan and Gareth Smith. A foray upfield by centre back James Brogan saw the ball rebound off the upright where it was gathered by cousin Bernard who coolly slotted it to the net. With half time approaching Plunketts could have put the game completely out of reach for the Marino men, but Nicholas Kennedy’s penalty shot hit the underside of the crossbar before Kieran McDonnell eventually slotted the ball over for a point. With a seven point cushion at the interval Plunketts looked well in command. However a second half rally by Vincents reduced the deficit to four points – 1-11 to 1-7 – with ten minutes remaining. However at that stage, a beautiful passing movement saw the Navan Roaders nail down a historic victory. Substitute Jason Sherlock gathered the ball and passed to Gareth Smith who in turn fed an inch perfect pass to Bernard Brogan. Soloing along the end line Brogan sent the ball across the face of the goal to the far post where Liam Fleming raced through to palm it into the Vincent’s net. Two more points sealed the victory giving Plunketts a well deserved victory margin of nine points. Bernard Brogan and captain Gareth Smith were outstanding for the victors as was James Brogan who outplayed and completely frustrated his Dublin inter county marker Diarmuid Connolly. Club
president John Quilter was ecstatic with the victory and admitted that
his sights were now firmly set on next year’s Dublin championship
– currently held by Vincents. Accepting
the cup from County Board chairman Gerry Harrington, Plunketts’
captain Gareth Smith sounded a poignant note proclaiming that “this
one is for you Margaret” - a reference to Margaret Doyle from
Woodvale in Clonsilla. Margaret who died recently was bar manager in
Plunketts' clubhouse. Referree
