New
season unveiled
The
line-up for Draiocht’s new season has been unveiled and, in keeping
with the theatre’s policy, a broad range of events has been organised
to keep the good citizens of Dublin 15 culturally entertained throughout
the spring and early summer.
The highlight for many will undoubtedly be Stagezone Productions “Oliver,”
a family favourite with cracking tunes from Lionel Bart. Many people
still consider the group’s epic production of “Les Miserables”
as Draiocht’s finest moment and if the story of Fagin, the Artful
Dodger et al is only half as good, then we’ll be in for a real
treat.
In fact music is very definitely in the air this year. Freddie White,
Juliet Turner, the indefatigable Sonny Knowles and Liam Clancy are all
set to grace the theatre’s hallowed main auditorium and Coolmine
Musical Society, fresh from the success of “Copacabana,”
will present “Music of the Night,” a celebration of the
music of Andrew Lloyd Webber.
Local performers such as Castleknock Community College and Stagezone
(in a variety performance separate to “Oliver”) will also
be strutting their stuff and “Over the Rainbow – the life
story of Eva Cassidy” looks certain to garner a lot of interest.
For those who like their musical entertainment slightly more highbrow,
the Fingal County Youth Orchestra play their much-anticipated annual
concert, while Ballet Ireland, despite Günther Falusy’s predictions
of imminent closure last December, are also due to perform a Ballet
Extravaganza at the end of April. Not to be outdone, the Marion Lennon
School of Ballet will also treat Dublin 15 audiences to two evenings
of this most refined art.
Drama is also well represented, though more toward the end of the season,
with productions from Fishamble, City Theatre and Revival Theatre to
look forward to. Bryan Murray is one to keep an eye out for as he stars
in “Love Letters” in May.
Children are not left out of the loop either with “The Bus”
promising a riotous ride at the end of March and of course Spréacha
(details yet to be announced) very much the focal point of the young
person’s year. As usual, there will be family days and school
workshops to help foster an interest in the arts among the younger generations.
The fifth Amharc Fhine Gall exhibition, featuring Carpenterstown’s
very own Logan McLain, hits the Ground Floor Gallery next month while
renowned etcher Naomi Sex opens her solo exhibition “Hindsight”
in the First Floor Gallery.
In order to minimise the effect on the summer programme, Draíocht
has decided to close for the months of July and August to facilitate
the instalment of a cafeteria in the foyer. The office will be fully
staffed throughout the project and online booking will be available
from August for the September to December season.
