The Golden Age of Swing, Jazz and Blues

It is always an occasion when the local girl plays her home town theatre and Rushbrook’s own Ellen McElroy looks certain to pack them in when she plays Draíocht for one night only in March.

The acclaimed Irish Diva pays her own tribute to the great divas of the past as she explores the lives, careers and especially the music of Doris Day, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Judy Garland, Aretha Franklin, Edith Piaf, Liza Minnelli, Diana Ross and Shirley Bassey.

Ellen is a regular performer at The National Concert Hall with Kevin Hough’s Theatre Nights and in fact Kevin will be hosting the evening. Another NCH regular, David Wray, will act as musical director and will also lend his band for the occasion.

“Coming from a background of musical theatre, my influences would have to be the likes of Stephen Sondheim, Jason Robert Brown, Stephen Schwartz and more recently the wonderful duo from New York Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich,” says Ellen. “But I am also very big into the old favourites such as Peggy Lee, Doris Day, Eartha Kitt, Etta James and the wonderful Ella Fitzgerald. Now there's a voice!”

Dublin-born Ellen has been performing since the age of nine, having received her training at the Bull Alley School of Performance and continued her theatre studies under Audrey Behan. Highlights of her career include leading roles in such musicals as The Hot Mikado, The Sound Of Music, The Rocky Horror Show, Jesus Christ Superstar and West Side Story. She has also shared the stage with such notables as John Barrowman and David Kernan in Aspects Of Love.

Ellen has received critical acclaim in several productions including: Side By Side by Sondheim and the new musical review , Simply Sondheim, commissioned by Opera Fringe, Northern Ireland, and recorded by the BBC. Ellen has toured the world with the Concordia Theatre Company on board the QE2.

Working with veteran musical director, David Wray she is currently working on a cabaret called New York Songbook as well as her own one woman show. Ellen has just complete a sold out US tour with the Three Irish Tenors as a member of The Irish Divas.

She performed her one woman show throughout the country last year and her first solo album, “Love’s Illusions” was released in May ’07 to great critical acclaim.

Ellen McElroy brings “Songbirds - The Golden Age of Swing, Jazz and Blues” to Draiocht’s main auditorium on Friday 7th March at 8pm.

Tickets are €20 / €18.
