| Driver testing centre The long drawn out saga of the use of the old AIB premises on Blanchard town’s Main Street may finally be coming nearer fruition with the news that a fresh planning application for the conversion of the premises to use as a driver testing centre are about to be lodged with Fingal County Council. The
building which was vacated in 2001 by AIB was bought the following year
by the Office of Public Works at a cost of €1.35m for use as a
probation and welfare office for the area. Following opposition from local residents and public representatives, plans for the probation office were scrapped and the building has lain idle ever since. One of the local councillors who opposed the plans for the probation office was then PD councillor, Mags Murray – now a member of Fianna Fáil – who lobbied her party colleagues Michael McDowell (former Minister for Justice) and Tom Parlon (former Minister of State at the Office of Public Works) against the project. Cllr. Murray proposed a number of alternative uses for the premises including a driver testing centre and/or a motor tax office. In September 2007, plans for a driver testing centre were finally lodged with Fingal County Council but surprisingly the lodged plans were deemed invalid as they failed to comply with planning regulations. However a fresh application is due to be lodged tin the coming days which hopefully will meet with the necessary planning requirements. According to Cllr. Murray, “the much needed Probation and Welfare Service office will now be accommodated in the new court complex adjacent to the Town Centre. I believe this is more appropriate, both as a location and as a deterrent to repeat offending for users of the service.”
