New GAA promotion initiative in Tyrellstown

A new Dublin GAA county board initiative has started out in Tyrellstown to provide a GAA club to cater for the ever burgeoning population. The board will provide initial support in the form of training material and instruction but is hoping that local parents will become involved to give it the internal local impetus that drives GAA clubs across the land.

Colm McGinty is the GAA Regional Development officer for West Dublin and he was on hand recently to oversee the training that took place on the premises of Tyrellstown Educate-Together school. “We believe that when you look at a new area like this with a huge amount of houses that there should be a GAA outlet. Obviously there are positives in that for the GAA in that you have potentially new participants and club in a new area but we think we bring a lot to areas too in terms of social capital and addressing social and community deficits.

“Our idea is to provide initial support for the people who hopefully will take it forward then. We will provide footballs, bibs, cones or anything training equipment and we are lucky that Educate-Together provides a location. We will give advice on setting up a club, registering players and any initial financial support. But we need to get local parents involved and there is nothing for them to fear as we will help out with training. No GAA knowledge is necessary.”

Claire Dowdall has been doing GAA work in the schools in Tyrellstown and Hartstown so there is a presence in the schools. The association’s challenge now is to develop that into the community and judging by the enthusiasm of the seventy or so children at training the outlook is positive. It is hoped in the near future to arrange under-8 and under-10 challenge games in the locality followed by Easter and summer camps.

Claire Dowdall is the Games Promotion Officer in the area and Claire can be contacted on 085-1617718. Training takes place between 1pm and 2pm on Saturday and anyone who has an enthusiastic youngster in that locality looking for a healthy enjoyable way to spend a Saturday afternoon - and who knows maybe a lifetime of them? – this is highly recommended.
