| Local Dubs’ all-star honoured by school One
of Scoil Bhríde’s most famous past pupils, GAA All-star
and Dublin defender, Barry Cahill returned to the Blanchardstown school
recently for a special presentation by pupils and teachers. According to school principal John Kearns, Barry left Scoil Bhríde in 1994 to attend secondary school in St Declan's. Prior to that he played for the school in a total of 5 football finals and one hurling final in Croke Park. He was also captain of the winning junior team in 1992 as well as being a member of the school soccer team which reached a league final in 1993 and 1994. Referring to his years in the school, Barry said “I had a number of great years here and I was fortunate to play on a lot of successful teams. I would encourage you all to get involved in sport as much as you can. Some of my fellow pupils from the time I was here are still my best friends. “I always remember that when we reached the semi-final, the fact that if you won would mean you would be playing in Croke Park was a great encouragement. Of course if you played in Croke Park you were always taken to McDonalds afterwards as well,” he joked. Barry
also thanked his teachers who he said “gave up a lot of their
free time after school to coach us and to bring us to matches. Please
God I will be back here in September or October with the Sam Maguire
cup to show you all.” Praising Barry’s commitment and skill, Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh said, “at this time of year, 33 teams will start training for the championship and there will be about 30 players in that panel. That’s about 1,000 players. Come October fifteen of those 1,000 players will be selected as All Stars and Barry Cahill was one of those fifteen last year. In years to come people will look at Barry’s All Star trophy and say that was in 2007 – the year before the Dubs won the All-Ireland.”
