World Book Day

To celebrate World Book Day 2008 on Thursday 6th March, booksellers throughout Ireland and National Book Tokens are again donating more than 3.5 million special WBD tokens to pupils in primary schools all over the country. Over the past eleven years more than 33 million book tokens have been given to Irish children at a cost to Irish booksellers of an estimated €44 million.

This campaign aims to provide all children with the opportunity to receive a free book, as every primary school child under 12 years of age is eligible to receive one of these special WBD tokens. Pre-schools and secondary schools must register to receive information packs while primary schools receive theirs automatically. Each child can then redeem their token against ten specially produced World Book Day books in bookstores nationwide from 3rd March to 30th March 2008.

These ten titles have been specially selected to appeal to children aged between two and eleven and include books from bestselling authors such as Michael Bond and Sue Bentley. Ireland’s own O’Brien’s Press is producing a special World Book Day title, Mad Grandad’s Robot Garden (5-8yrs), by hugely popular Irish children’s author Oisin McGann. This book will be exclusive to Irish readers.

Borders as usual are extending the festivities and spreading out the fun and games for younger readers over the entire weekend.

Gordon Snell has been prevailed upon to read from some of his terrific books for the occasion. Gordon is a well-known scriptwriter and author of books for children and adults. Some of his most popular titles include The Phantom Horseman, Dangerous Treasure, The Mystery of Monk Island, The Curse of Werewolf Castle and The Tex and Sheelagh Omnibus. He also has the distinction of being married to the struggling author, Maeve Binchy.

There will also be a complete programme of competitions, readings and facepainting over the weekend.
