Seachtain na Gaeilge

Seachtain Na Gaeilge or “Irish Language Week” has become a regular feature of the Blanchardstown Library calendar, with a host of exciting events designed to encourage the use of spoken Irish.

Although it normally runs for seven days, this year the programme has been expanded to cover a whole fortnight.

The island of Ireland is internationally renowned for its diverse cultural productions and also for its sporting achievements in GAA, rugby and soccer. One of the aims with Seachtain na Gaeilge is to build on this international acclaim and to promote the Irish language globally.

One of the highlights of the events in the Library is the visit of author and poet Micheal O’Ruairc. Known to generations of schoolchildren as the man who compiles the Leaving Cert texts, the Kerry-born, Coolmine resident is well qualified to espouse the beauty of the Irish language.

Schools in the area also had the opportunity to quiz the highly popular literary gardener, Joe O’Brien, when he visited Blanchardstown Library this week. Joe is an award-winning gardener who lives in Ballyfermot in Dublin. He is well known and has a high media profile including regular guest appearances on his local radio station, WDAR 96 FM and is also highly involved with children's group projects. He is the author of the very popular “Alfie Green” series of books.

Perennial visitors to the Library, the Seamus Ennis Centre musicians return once more for an evening of traditional music and song. Based in the Naul, the Centre is named in honour of one of Ireland's foremost traditional musicians, collectors of folklore and broadcasters and serves as a focal point for traditional music and culture within Fingal. The renowned and highly accomplished musicians are no strangers to Blanchardstown having played here as part of both the Bealtaine and Seachtain na Gaeilge festivals in previous years.

They play the Library on Thursday 13th March at 7pm.
