Showing
racism the red card in Blakestown
‘Show
racism the red card’ is an initiative set up to tackle the problem
of racism in society through the medium of sport. It is an educational
project which hopes to harness the profile of sports personalities and
others to communicate an anti-racism message.
The project, which is a registered charity, is supported by all major
sporting organisations in Ireland as well and its sponsors included
the Department of Justice, Equality & Law Reform.
The organisation recently launched a DVD and education pack aimed at
educating secondary school students and the event was attended by many
of the big names in Irish sport. Present also were students from Erne
class in Blakestown Communiuty School. They were impressed by the presence
of a number of well-known names such as Irish international Kevin Kilbane
and Dublin football star Paul Casey.
The students took part in a question and answer session and were horrified
to hear their sports personalities speaking about their experiences
of racism while playing sport.
Show Racism the Red Card is a resource that is now being used amongst
the teaching staff of Blakestown Community School in the subjects of
religion, civic social and political education (CSPE) and social, personal
and health education (SPHE). According to teachers the resource is proving
invaluable as it reaches out to children both in class and outside on
the sports field.
The latest campaign will see 5,000 DVDs and packs being distributed
to schools and community groups around the country, with the intention
of the students getting involved in projects of their own.
