Sporting
Fingal states its case for community support
Sporting Fingal FC, the recently founded Eircom League of Ireland community
based football club, will compete in the Eircom League First Division
in the 2008 season. The setting up of this new independently funded
club and the proposed development by Fingal County Council of a football
academy complex are part of the council’s football development
plan which has been almost 2 years in the making.
Former Irish International player Liam Buckley has been appointed Director
of Football with Sporting Fingal FC. A third element of the council’s
football development plan would see a long term proposal being put forward
to facilitate the construction of a community sports stadium.
Although not investing financially in Sporting Fingal FC, Fingal County
Council is firmly committed to ensuring that this new club will build
and develop a strong community spirit through sport in Ireland’s
fastest growing county.
Sporting Fingal FC is privately funded by a team of owners and investors
who came together in response to an invitation for expressions of interest
advertised by Fingal County Council in mid-2007. The majority share
in Sporting Fingal FC is owned by Gerry Gannon, a businessman well known
for his longstanding involvement in community based projects.
Primary club sponsorship has also been committed by Keelings Group Ltd.,
Anglo Irish Bank Corporation and Liffey Developments.
The club is trying to set up a supporters’ club in the Fingal
area and being a member costs €5 and entitles the member to a leather
wallet, membership card and 10% off merchandise and entry to Morton
Stadium.
