The
power of a few
Following
on from Pablo Vasquez Borragan’s highly evocative “Defenders
of the Spanish Republic” photographic exhibition at Blanchardstown
Library comes an equally thought-provoking photo essay by Blackrock
photographer Elaine Ryan.
Entitled “What a few can do,” the exhibition is a colourful
documentation of the work of the Rosminian missionaries in rural Tanzania
and Malawi. It examines the lives of the people of the region, particularly
in the areas of health and education and demonstartes how a few good
people can have such a positive effect on so many.
Taken at the end of 2007, this is a colourful professional exhibition
that is full of joy and hope without ignoring the injustice and imbalance
that exists in society. It provides a welcome, if uncomfortable window
on a world that is very much hidden from our eyes and focuses on the
small group of committed and skilled people, with the much-needed support
from people at home, and its far-reaching and long-lasting effect on
the lives of developing communities.
Elaine Ryan was Winner of the People Category and overall winner of
the ICI Imagedate Student Digital Photographer of Year Award 2004 for
photographers in both Ireland and the UK. She also teaches a photography
night class in Castleknock VEC.
“What a few can do” by Elaine Ryan can be viewed at Blanchardstown
Library for two weeks from Tuesday 25th March.
Admission is free during library opening hours.
