| Safety in the home The
last issue of Community Voice gave details of a number
of local projects which have received funding from the Dormant Accounts
Fund. The biggest grant recipient in the current batch of grants was
Blanchardstown Area Partnership which received an allocation of €30,000
for a community security project. According to Linda Curran Manager of BAP, “at a meeting between ourselves, the local Friendly Call Service and RAPID, we heard concerns about the impact of the current climate of crime and drugs on the quality of life of older people. Very often it is the fear of crime rather than crime itself which is having the greatest effect on their self-confidence.” The newly funded project will involve the identification of older people in need of assessment of their safety in their home. These assessments will be carried out based on referrals from public health nurses and the Friendly Call service. “Following these assessments, relevant safety precautions will be installed in the homes of selected clients,” said Linda. “These will include the provision of locks, alarms, spyholes and other safety items. All of the work will be carried out by reputable suppliers.” Based on the funding received it is anticipated that initially up to 40 older persons will be provided with this safety equipment in their homes. In
a further element to the project, three public seminars will be held
covering such topics as “Managing your home safety”; “Health
and safety in the home” and “Personal safety and crime prevention.”
These seminars will be targeted at older people and carers living in
the RAPID areas of Dublin 15.
