Hartstown wins a green flag

With the growing awareness of green issues among the younger population of Dublin 15, green flags are starting to appear on the flag poles of some of our local schools. Along with their peers in Blakestown Community School, the pupils of Hartstown Community School along with their teachers, Breda Walshe and Jeremy Kerr were the proud recipients of one of the first two flags for second level schools recently.Cllr. The flag was hoisted on the flag pole in the school grounds by Cllr. Alan Farrell, Mayor of Fingal during which he also presented the principal, Maureen Black with a cheque from the council to further the work of the school’s green committee.

Referring to the theme of the students’ project ‘litter and waste’, the mayor said that from their analysis of waste in bins in the school they “discovered over 86% of items in the bins should be recycled and that 5,500 litres of waste was going to landfill unnecessarily every week. I believe that the school’s waste output has been reduced by 60% which is also a great financial saving for the school,” he said.

Ms. Black congratulated the committee and teachers on their achievement. “This is a historic day for the school and marks a milestone in the development of Hartstown Community School. The green flag is a recognition of the really hard work this group of students has done and is an example to the rest of the school.”

Ms. Black also revealed that the next project to be undertaken by the committee was to look at ways of reducing energy consumption in the school.

Speaking to Community Voice after the ceremony, Fr. Dan Joe O’Mahony, chaplain to the school singled out the work of school caretaker for special mention. “Martin O’Boyle has been a hugely important part of this project and has been involved with the school’s green school committees since they started some years ago,” he said.
