Scoil Oilibhéir break SFX successful quiz run

This year’s Tráth na gCeist, the annual Irish language schools quiz organised by Blanchardstown Library to mark Seachtain na Gaeilge, proved to be something of a break with tradition. After winning the cup for the past four years, the team from St. Francis Xavier had to be content with joint second place, when Scoil Oilibhéir comfortably ran out winners by a score of 44 points (out of a possible 48) to 40. The winning Scoil Oilibhéir team. (L-R): Eoghan Ó Súilleabháin, Barra Mac Giolla Iasachta, Gráinne Uí Chaomhánaigh (principal), Dara Mac Gabhann and Síomha Ní Chonchubhair

Scoil Thomáis, also a regular competitor in the event, tied for second place with the pupils of St. Francis Xavier.

Interestingly the teams were running pretty much neck and neck for the first three rounds, but it was the six questions in round four (of the eight round competition) on the Irish language that moved Scoil Oilibhéir into a lead that they never looked like losing. Anyone wishing to pit their wits against the young quiz winners can see how they would fare on the same questions below.

As usual, the quizmaster was senior librarian Charlie Quinn, ably assisted by colleagues Declan O’Neill and Ger Flynn. “The quiz is a way of bringing all the local schools together in a positive spirit to promote the Irish language,” said Charlie. “It also offers an opportunity to bring teachers together in the library in an educational and social context.”

The other participating schools in this year’s competition were St. Ciaran’s Hartstown, Mount Sackville, Scoil Bhríde Boys and St Philip’s, Mountview.
