Mulhuddart bridge replacementCurrent view of Mulhuddart bridge

Local county councillors have agreed to “delist” Mulhuddart Bridge from the county’s list of protected structures. The decision was taken following a lengthy debate at the local area committee of the council last month.

The council’s water services department had been advised by the Office of Public Works (OPW) that the existing old bridge is now considered to be unsafe and likely to collapse in a future flood situation.

The council’s engineers proposed that a new bridge would be built to replace both the old bridge and the pedestrian bridge beside it.

Speaking to Community Voice, the chairperson of the area committee, Cllr. Michael O’Donovan said “we deferred a decision on this to allow engineers to come back to us with a new design. This new design features stone cladding and has a cycleway as well as footpaths.

“We have also asked for some use to be made of the stone from the old bridge. Our Parks Department will take the bridge stones and I’ll be asking for some artistic feature to be designed for the Tolka Valley,” he said
