Another
international medal for Lisa Kurtz
In
January we featured Lisa Kurtz, an international Kickboxer from Luttrellstown
Wood who had a successful 2007 in World and European championships.
Lisa has again brought home a medal from a European kickboxing event,
this time winning a silver medal in the International Golden Gloves
tournament, which was held in Treviso, Italy.
Lisa, aged 16, won her medal in the ladies’ light contact division.
This was her first major competition at senior level and it represented
a big step up for her in terms of competing with adults.
Clearly not to be daunted but the deeper waters, Lisa put in a fine
performance in her semi-final disposing of an Italian competitor and
winning the bout comprehensively. In the final Lisa met another Italian,
a battle-hardened competitor who was as tough as she looked.
In the first round the Italian gained the upper hand and in a lively
round used her experience to good advantage. It took all Lisa’s
skill and stamina to stay in the fight at this stage.
The second round saw Lisa emerge with a determination to fight back
and her attitude paid off. She slowly recovered some of the lost ground
and held her own for the remainder of the round, which again saw some
very competitive exchanges between the pair.
At the end of the bout it was the Italians experience and superior strength
that paid off, winning the bout 3-0. But after a jump in standard to
this level, Lisa could be satisfied with her performance, having lasted
the course and making the Italian work for her gold.
2008 looks like being another successful year for Dublin 15’s
young international star.
