Success
for Coolmine Community School’s athletes
They
great contribution that Coolmine Community school makes to the area
was rewarded recently on the athletics field as both boys’ and
girls’ cross-country teams acquitted themselves very well at the
recent school’s championship in Galway with the latter winning
the silver medal.
The event took place in extremely muddy conditions in Loughrea, Co.
Galway, on Saturday 8th March. In the Junior Girls' Race, Claire Brennan
was 3rd and Siobhan Doyle came 11th. The team, made up of Claire, Siobhan,
Emma O'Lone and Sophie Freeman won Silver, the first time Coolmine has
ever won a team medal at All-Ireland level. Claire Brennan will be on
the Ireland Schools junior cross country team running in Perth in Scotland
shortly.
Niamh Doyle (Siobhan's sister) was a very respectable 16th in the Intermediate
Girls’ race. In the Senior Boys, David Flynn came 4th after spending
most of the race in 3rd place, while Liam Tremble was 11th. These two
had been selected the previous weekend, at the clubs’ All-Ireland
Championships in Belfast, to represent Ireland on the Junior team for
the World Cross-Country championship to be held in Edinburgh on March
30th.
David also came 1st in the Metro St. Brigid’s 5k juniors St Patrick’s
Day race when his time was 15:20.
Along with other team members Andrew Brennan and Colm Carr, the Senior
Boys team narrowly missed the bronze medal. All the students are from
the Coolmine/Blanchardstown/Castleknock area.
