Dunboyne
Tennis Club brings back the Silverware
It
may seem a tad early in the year for a Meath team to be travelling to
Dublin and returning with silverware but this is what happened recently
when the Dunboyne Tennis club enjoyed great success at a tournament
in south Dublin.
It was a cold and wind-swept Sunday morning when a group of tennis players
converged on Dunboyne tennis club for the trip south to Templeogue LTC
to compete in the Class 6 Dublin Winter League finals.
In this rather un-Tennis like weather, the ladies team’s opponents
for the day were Sandycove 3, while the men’s team were facing
the home side Templeogue 10.
The matches commenced at 11 o’clock.
The ladies’ team fared very well taking the match 2-0 with maximum
efficiency in a little over an hour. The scores were: first pair of
Leona Flynn (C) and Kay Malone won (6/4, 6/2), second pair of Jean McDonald
and Tara Woolridge won (6/2, 6/4) and the third pair of Annette McGrath
and Ann-Marie McCague retired at (6/3, 3/4)
The men’s team had quite a fight on their hands, the third pair
of John Kennedy and Paul Hannon won in 2 sets (6/3, 6/3) and the first
pair of Shane Brady and Matthew Brady lost in a close 3 setter (6/4,
4/6, 6/4). This left a hard fought decider for the second pair of Fergus
O’Toole (C) and Gus Phipps who finally won in 3 sets (6/7, 6/1,
6/3).
Both teams are anxious to acknowledge the other team members that didn’t
play on the day, but who also played an integral part in this success.
They are Deirdre Power, Claire McCormack, Lynn Acheson, David Garcia
and Kevin Duke.
A huge thank you is also offered to the supporters that came all the
way to Templeogue, to cheer them on and brave the cold, wind and occasional
showers of rain and sleet. But clearly the supporters had a team well
worth cheering on.
