Get
a kick out of Dunboyne
Cole
Albert Porter (June 9, 1891 – October 15, 1964) was one of the
greatest contributors to the Great American Songbook. A contemporary
of George Gershwin, Richard Rogers and Jerome Kern, the Indiana-born
Porter broke from the simple sentimentality that dominated Tin Pan Alley,
while his urbane wit and musical complexity won him the affection of
the nation.
Songs such as What Is This Thing Called Love, I Get A Kick Out of You
and Too Darn Hot became instant hits and have remained classics. While
his name was associated with many of these upbeat show tunes, a more
melancholy side could be seen in such wonderful songs as Miss Otis Regrets
and Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye.
Fans of the great man will doubtless be interested to hear that Dunboyne
Musical Society has chosen to feature many of his greatest hits in their
fourth production, “De-lightful, De-lovely,” which plays
three nights in Ratoath this month.
Set up in December 2003 by a few people new to the area who had been
involved with other musical and drama societies and wanted to do so
again, the DMS has enjoyed great success in its inaugural years. In
2006, they joined AIMS, the Association for Irish Musical Societies,
which has opened the door to the Amateur Dramatics scene a bit wider
for the group.
The three previous highly-acclaimed performances had been compilations
of songs from Hollywood and the shows, although they were set to come
out with a fully-fledged musical in “Oklahoma!” last year,
when an unprecedented bout of winter illnesses forced them to abandon
the venture.
“Cole Porter is one of theatre's most prolific songwriters - he
wrote for many films and stage shows including High Society, Anything
Goes and Kiss me Kate among others,” says DMS PR Sinead Ryan.
“His music has a timeless quality and is much loved, all these
years later. Think of songs like You're the Top, Who wants to be a millionaire?,
Let's Do it, Night & Day, Be A Clown ... all these and many more
feature in De-lightful, De-lovely, which is DMS' fourth production and
sure to be sold out again this year.
“Come along and see the music beautifully played by their live
band and sung and acted by the cast. You'll have a Swellegant, Elegant
night for sure!” says Sinead.
“De-lightful, De-lovely” by Dunboyne Musical Society plays
the Venue in Ratoath from Thursday 17th to Saturday 19th April.
Tickets are €18 / €15.
