Too young to be old

It is an oft quoted maxim that you are never too old to try something new and, whereas the over fifties may not feel the urge to go bungee jumping or hang-gliding, the areas of dance and music are bound to interest even the most senior of our citizens.

As part of the Bealtaine Festival this Spring, men and women aged 50+ will be invited to take part in a two week creative exploration of dance and music at the National Concert Hall, culminating in a public dance performance in that building’s John Field room.

“Too Young to Be Old”, which will take place from 12th - 24th May, is being organised in partnership with CoisCéim Dance Theatre and the National Concert Hall, who will make their highly trained dancers and musicians available for the project.

The music workshop will encourage participants to discover more about melody, rhythm and harmony with professionally trained musicians, while the dance and music workshop combines easy stretch exercises and simple dance sequences with exploration of music. The cost for the full two weeks is €100 and no previous experience is necessary.

However, CoisCéim recognises that many people will be reluctant to commit to the full two week course without knowing exactly what they are letting themselves in for and to this end, they have organised a series of taster workshops around Dublin.

For Blanchardstown and surrounding areas, the workshops will take place at Draíocht on Thursday 10th April (music only) and Thursday 8th May (dance and music.) Times for both events are 10.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m.

Draíocht has regularly participated in Bealtaine festivals providing art and drama workshops for local Dublin 15 people, and its established older people’s art group, The Dabblers, continue to meet regularly in Draíocht for arts and craft workshops outside of the Bealtaine Festival.

Emer McGowan, Draíocht’s director, said of the Dabblers, “throughout the years, they have demonstrated an energy, enthusiasm and creativity which has been second to none. Draíocht is delighted to support the Dabblers and will continue to find new and exciting ways to nurture the artistic vigour they have shown.

“This year, Draíocht is excited to be involved with CoisCéim’s dance and music project, the first of its kind in Draíocht for older people.”
