Cloud
computing at IBM
Researchers seeking smarter ways to tackle the most complicated computing
tasks think they've found the answer in a cloud. However they are not
referring to the kind that drifts across our skies.
What they are talking about is something called cloud computing, which
aims to deliver supercomputing power over the internet.
Cloud computing involves people using a shared infrastructure to access
IT services and is driven by the growth in recent years of technologies
like social networking and streaming media.
Dublin 15 based multi national IBM is the latest to adopt cloud computing
and the company recently announced the creation of 21 new jobs at its
Innovation campus in Damastown at what will be Europe’s first
cloud computing centre.
The centre will serve as a European hub to provide research and services
to a number of satellite facilities which will be built in Europe, the
Middle East and Africa.
Speaking at the company’s official announcement of the new project,
Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Micheál Martin
TD said "the selection of Ireland as the location for IBM's European
hub for cloud computing highlights Ireland's role as an important contributor
to IBM's global research, development and innovation strategy."
