Herbert’s
big sweep
Members
of the Herbert Road Resident’s Association took to the road recently
in their first ever annual spring clean.
“There is a symbolic nature to the sweeping of the road this morning,”
said secretary, Fran Dempsey. “We are celebrating several things
- the coming of spring, the arrival of our new road signs, our new cul-de-sac
sign and our membership of Neighbourhood Watch.”
The association attracted considerable controversy in the past year
with a protracted row over a disputed right of way to the Tolka river.
The right of way was extinguished last December by Fingal County Council.
According to Fran, “all parties concerned with the court case
are now members of the residents’ association. We are only twenty
one houses but we are very united and determined that Herbert Road will
continue to be as it always was – a friendly and close-knit community.”
The association was also rather concerned by some potential bad publicity
generated recently when a man called Martin Morgan, convicted by the
courts of running a brothel in the city centre, gave his address as
Herbert Road, Blanchardstown.
“We were most annoyed at the constant reference to our road in
the national media – especially as the man never lived here,”
explained Fran. “Initially we wrote to the editors of all the
newspapers with our complaint, to no avail. We then wrote to the Court
and suddenly Mr. Morgan’s ‘former address’ suddenly
became ‘Blacksheep Road, Blanchardstown’ in the subsequent
reports.”
Blacksheep Road is another fictitious name but rather apt in the circumstances.
