Castleknock Tennis Championships

The spring junior championships of Castleknock Tennis Club ( CLTC) took place last week Mar 25-30. 142 children between 8 and 16 years old took part, which is double the figure of just two years ago and represents great progress for the club. Around 50 players took part in 22 singles and doubles finals on 30th March. The event was a huge success with large numbers of children spending the second week of their school holidays active and outdoors rather than in front of Televisions or game consoles.

Castleknock Lawn Tennis Club (CLTC) was established in 1927 and has always been a great club for over-40s. However in the late summer of 2006 many parents felt that while “elite” children were doing well in regional competitions for the club there was not enough being done for the vast majority for whom tennis was for fun and exercise.

Under the leadership of Jo O’ Brien and Kevin Heuston and with the support of the CLTC executive, junior committees were established to provide increased coaching for all kids and to establish regular social tennis for them. This has been a huge success with large numbers attending weekly weekend social tennis for 5th/6th class and 1st years, Pizza night Friday tennis for 1st/2nd years and Friday afternoon tennis for 3rd to 5th classes.

This has seen a dramatic increase in the standard across all age groups and of equal importance has enabled children and their parents to socialise in a positive way. This was reflected on finals day on Sunday when over a hundred adults attended to cheer on and encourage all the children.
