Spanish
visitors welcomed by Coolmine
Coolmine 55-5 Quimic
Last
weekend saw an unusual day at the Coolmine club as vistors from foreign
shores were entertained by Coolmine when the club’s second team
hosted Spanish touring side Quimic.
While the match itself was a one-sided affair the visitors showed great
skill and determination and never gave up the fight. Six Coolmine tries
in the first-half finished the game off, however the score flattered
the home side as Quimic had most of the territory and possession.
It took Coolmine 20 minutes into the second-half to get on the score
board again for the first of their their tries however it was the visitors
who had the last say with a last minute consolation try in the corner.
This Catalonian side are currently Div 2 champions in their own region
and have gained promotion this year to Division 1. They were here for
six days and had already played a match against Instonions in Belfast.
Although rugby is a minority sport in Spain the players all follow the
six nations with great enthusiasm and know all the star players. They
attended the Leinster v Glasgow match and were delighted to see Coolmine
coach and Leinster star Bernard Jackman on the side line for their match.
Needless to say a large queue formed for photos and autographs afterwards.
In the garnd old rugby tradition both sides retired to the clubhouse
for food, drinks, speeches (both in Spanish and English) and presentations.
