Under 10 Gaelic Football - O’Dwyer’s v St. Peregrine’s

St. Peregrine’s of Blakestown were the visitors to Bremore Park on Saturday 15th March, were they took on the under-10 squad of O’Dwyer’s on a damp Saturday morning. The teams were streamed and divided into two groups; both 40 minute games were played at the same time.St.Peregrine’s Under 10 Footballers

The emphasis at this level is on developing the basic skills of Gaelic football. This means that three points are awarded for a score over the bar, while a score under the bar earns one point for a team. A ‘skill’ point is also awarded for a successful defensive block. When travelling with the ball, players are only allowed to hope and solo the ball once. This encourages the players to pass the ball and develops kicking and fist pass skills, as well as promoting a teamwork ethic.

In the first match, the visitors got off to a flying start. St Peregrine’s captain Cian Tuite scored a point within the first minute of the game. In an excellent first-half, O’Dwyer’s attempted to keep pace with Peregrine’s, scoring a well taken goal in the process. Despite this, St Peregrines held a slight lead going into the second half. O’Dwyer’s came out ‘all guns blazing’ after the break, scoring two goals in quick succession. In response, the Peregrines defence tightened up significantly. Full back Kevin Diallo got to the ball first on numerous occasions, frustrating the O’Dwyers forwards. Goals from Jack Beirnes and John Layton sealed the victory for St Peregrines.

Final Score: O’Dwyer’s 7pts St. Peregrine’s 23pts

In the second match, O’Dwyer’s started off the stronger side. It didn’t take too long for St Peregrine’s to come into the game with some excellent display of skill from James Scully and Christopher Keogh in midfield. St Peregrine’s marking was good throughout the game, as they did not allow O’Dwyer’s too much time on the ball. Both teams put in a great effort and were evenly matched, with O’Dwyer’s just running out winners in the end with two scores over the bar achieved during the dying minutes of the game.

Final Score: O’Dwyers 18pts St. Peregrines 12pts

As is customary at this level, the scores of both matches were added together to decide the overall winners on the day. Both of the St. Peregrine’s sides played a crucial part in a resounding victory for their club. The team mentors for St.Peregrine’s were Dermot O'Hannigan, Ben O'Neill and Brian Flynn.
