Mountview pupils’ quiz success

Pupils of St Philip the Apostle school in Mountview did their community proud recently when they narrowly lost a tie break for first place in the recent National Parents' Council - Primary schools quiz held in St Brigid's GAA Club, Russell Park.Members of the quiz team from St. Philip’s in Mountview. 31 teams from north Dublin took part in the event – including no less than 18 teams from Dublin 15.

There were six rounds of ten questions each with a possible total score of 60 points to be achieved. As the teams entered the final round there was little separating the top three – St Philips, St Francis Xavier, Blanchardstown and Glasnevin Educate Together.

Tension was high as the results of the final round were announced with St Philips and Glasnevin tying on an amazing 58 points each. And so the dreaded tie break round – a further round of ten questions for the two top teams. In the event Glasnevin pipped it by a single point. Both teams missed one question – Which LUAS line, red or green, would you use if you were going to the Dundrum Shopping Centre (the answer was green) but unfortunately Glasnevin correctly answered that the statue of David was in Florence. St. Philips guessed it was in Rome.

The winning team members each received a Nintendo DS Light. For the Mountview pupils there was a runners up prize of a €70 Smyth’s toy store voucher each while the SFX pupils each received an Eason’s voucher for €30 for their third placing.

The National Parents Council-Primary is a voluntary, statutory organisation representing parents of children attending early and primary education. According to local council member Caitríona Peelo, “our aim is to improve and enrich the education of all children and support parents to get involved in their children's learning at home, in the community and at school.”

The pupils of St Philips were certainly delighted and suitably enriched by their success at this year’s quiz.
