Christy
Moore in Castleknock
One of Ireland’s most popular singer songwriters, Christy Moore
visited Castleknock Community College as part of Amnesty International’s
‘Voice our Concern’ schools’ initiative.
This human rights education project has been organised in Irish schools
over the past number of years by Amnesty and according to a spokesperson
“it aims to bring together transition year and other second level
students, teachers and leading Irish artists in the creative expression
of human rights concerns.”
In previous years artists, poets, photographers and film makers have
worked with pupils as part of this initiative culminating in a day of
performance or exhibitions of the work undertaken.
Music was the medium chosen for this year’s project and nine Irish
musicians volunteered their services to work with the participating
schools. One of these schools was Castleknock Community College and
they were delighted when they discovered that Christy Moore was the
musician who had been chosen by Amnesty to work with them, using the
medium of their music to explore issues around human rights.
The high point of the project will occur next month with a May Day concert
in the Helix theatre in Dublin City University where students from the
nine schools will come together to perform to a packed audience of friends,
family and classmates.
