Reprieve
for Lifestart
The Lifestart family support service based in Wellview estate in Mulhuddart
has recently received confirmation from the HSE that it is to receive
the necessary funding to remain in operation. There had been serious
fears that the service was in danger of closing later this month following
indications that the HSE was proposing to discontinue financial contributions
to the service.
In response to a question tabled in the Dáil by Joan Burton TD,
the HSE has now written to the deputy indicating that it would its extend
its funding until the end of 2008.
Speaking to Community Voice, Deputy Burton said “this
news will come as a huge relief to the many families who benefit from
it. The fact that demand for these services is growing exponentially
is a testament to the quality of the service and to the commitment of
its staff.
“While I am delighted that its immediate survival has been secured,
it’s important that steps are now taken to secure its long term
future. While the funding promised by the HSE will allow Lifestart to
provide a skeleton service up to the end of 2008, it is important that
this service is now put on a permanent and sustainable footing for the
years ahead,” she said.
Meanwhile Community Voice understands that the Department
of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs has agreed, “to facilitate
a meeting of the relevant stakeholders in the near future with a view
to progressing the matter of funding for the organisation.”
