Calling all writers

Psst! Ever wanted to be in a book?

Following on from the artistic and indeed commercial success of the Phoenix Writers’ Group anthology “Phoenix Ink” which was published last December, the editorial team is now calling for submissions for the next opus due to be launched this November. As yet untitled, the book will endeavour to represent the best of Dublin 15’s literary talent and to match the high standards set by its predecessors.

The new book will be the latest in a line of literary compilations by Dublin 15 writers groups that now stretches back over ten years to “Shades of Scaldwood” in 1996. “Whisperings” followed in 2002 but it was really with the publication of “Mongrel Scribe” in late 2006 that a more regular and systematic approach was adopted.

Although “Phoenix Ink” was compiled almost entirely by the members of the Group, for the new book, the team has decided on a slightly different approach. “We have decided to cast the net for submissions a bit wider to encourage a bit more variety,” explained co-editor Tony Devlin. “We hope this will encourage even more participants to come along and enjoy the fruits of the group. And it will also reduce the possibility that we might become too introspective as a group.”

Consequently, an open invitation has gone out to submit works of poetry and creative prose to the editorial team of Tony Devlin, John O’Donnell, Joan Cassidy Dees and Monica Anne Dunne. Preference will naturally be given to members of the group but submissions are particularly encouraged from any writers based in the general Dublin 15 area.

A maximum of three pieces may be submitted, which may include poems, short stories or any other form of creative or descriptive writing. Although there is no formal restriction on length, it should be noted that a 20,000 word novelette is unlikely to feature in the completed anthology. In addition to the three pieces, submitters may also contribute a short poem of less than 30 words (including title) and a micro story of less than 150 words (including title.)

Submissions will be accepted by email only to phoenixinfingal@gmail.com and must be included in the body of the mail or as attachments using MS Word format. Contact details should also be included as well as a short biographical note (no more than 50 words) for publication in the event that the submission is successful.

The deadline for submissions is June 7th 2008 and the final decisions regarding work accepted for publication will be notified by August 30th.
