Young people try to improve Tyrrelstown bus service

The recently appointed youth officer for the Tyrrelstown area has certainly hit the ground running. Julie Defranoux who is employed by Blanchardstown Youth Service to work with the young people of Tyrrelstown has recently assisted five of those young people to develop and complete a survey aimed at improving the quality of the bus service for the local community. The five youngsters carried out the survey as part of their entry in the recent Blanchardstown Youth Service ABC Awards and the Foróige Youth Citizenship Programme. Recognising the problems surrounding the local bus service, which included people being left waiting for late buses or buses which often didn’t turn up at all, they decided to do something about it.

According to Julie, “the five youngsters put all their effort and time during the Easter break into researching the bus service standards in the area and local perceptions of the quality of the service. They documented their findings and compiled the data from their interviews at the bus stop.”

All the information was compiled into a comprehensive report which has been submitted to the Public Affairs Department of Dublin Bus, accompanied by a letter detailing the groups’ grievances on behalf of the community.

“The young members look forward to hearing back from Dublin Bus and to having an opportunity to discuss the issue more fully with them,” said Julie. “They are hoping that some positive change will be seen in the very near future and that all living in the Tyrrelstown community no longer feel geographically cut-off from the rest of Dublin 15.”

Just before Community Voice went to press, the young people received a response to their submission from Dublin Bus. “They said that they had referred the matter to the Harristown depot which looks after Tyrrelstown,” said Julie. “They also said that they had asked the management at Harristown to take on board the young people’s comments and that they hope to improve the service. They didn’t offer us a meeting but we hope that maybe we will be able to meet the management people in Harristown to discuss the matter further.”
