New
Phoenix Park shuttle bus service
The May bank holiday weekend will see the launch of a new shuttle bus
service for visitors to the Phoenix Park.
The new service will run every half hour along a circular route around
the park. It will commence its journey at Heuston Station stopping at
the Zoo, Farmleigh, the Ordnance Survey, the Papal Cross and up to the
Ashtown Castle visitors’ centre. From there it will return via
the Zoo, finishing back at Heuston Station.
According to a spokesperson for the Office of Public Works (OPW) the
new bus service, which will operate daily between the hours of 7 a.m.
and 7 p.m., is aimed at visitors to the park as well as people who work
in the park.
“It is hoped that the new service will also help to reduce the
number of cars entering the Phoenix Park,” he told Community
Voice. “We would hope that people will use other public
transport such as LUAS or Dublin Bus to get to the Park and then use
the new shuttle bus to get around the various sights.”
“We will also be subsidising the buses to encourage people to
use the service,” said the spokesperson. “Initially we will
be charging an introductory fare of €1 which will allow you get
on and off the bus throughout the entire day. We are hoping that by
offering people a new way to visit the park they will consider leaving
their cars at home.”
The new service will be operated by Aircoach who will be using “green
buses” powered by bio-fuel. “This will be in keeping with
our own green policies,” said the spokesperson.
