Coolmine Seconds clinch League Division 2 title

Coolmine's 2nd XV made club history recently by winning the Re-Max Provincial Seconds League Div 2 for the first time ever. In doing so, Coolmine completed what could be considered a near perfect league season in which they lost only one of their eleven games and even that was by the narrow margin of just a kick of the ball.“Okay, this is how it’s done” – a rare glimpse of the inner sanctum of the dressing-room

The team started its campaign last October with a 36-0 win away against Enniscorthy in Wexford. Two more wins quickly followed this and the score-lines of 34-0 and 34-3 could hardly have been more emphatic. After three games, fifteen tries had been scored and only three points conceded. It was clear at that stage that Coolmine was one of the teams that were going to set the standard in the league.

Tougher opposition followed but a string of gutsy performances ensured the winning streak was to continue. The only blip on the radar was an 8-5 away defeat at Portarlington in a top-of-the-table clash, but in true-to-form fashion Coolmine bounced back the following week to secure a hard fought victory over the then league leaders Newbridge by 10 points to 6. With only four games left Coolmine now topped the table by a narrow margin. At that stage it looked like bonus points were going to be crucial.

The victories continued, but the start of season try-fest did not which left Coolmine short on bonus points. However their nearest rivals, Newbridge and Portarlington began to struggle also and a victory over bottom of the table Railway “Championes” – Coolmine Div. 2 WinnersUnion would have clinched the title. The title would be theirs even though they did not get to taste victory on the pitch as Railway conceded the game thus leaving Coolmine untouchable on top of the table.

The league winners ended the campaign with a formidable set of statistics. Some 198 points including 31 tries were scored - a mere 46 points with 4 tries were conceded while a nine-point gap separated first and second. The old saying has it that the League table never lies and this is emphatic confirmation that the laurels rest where they are most deserved.
