| Arabic food sale supports Connolly Hospital Having
lived in Ireland for nine years, Riverwood resident and Egyptian citizen
Doaa Morsy felt it was time that she and her friends became more involved
in their adopted community. Last year Doaa, who teaches Arabic in Laurel Lodge community centre, heard that the cancer department of Connolly Hospital was looking for beds so she raised the matter with members of the Arabic class and with other friends. “We decided to organise an event where we cooked Arabic food, we sold it at a function in St. Brigid’s Community Centre in Blanchardstown and the money raised was presented to the hospital’s oncology department. This year Doaa and 21 friends once again repeated their efforts and raised over €1,100 for the local hospital. “We were delighted to give Irish people the opportunity to learn about our food and our ways of cooking,” said Doaa, “it’s a good way of promoting co-existence between us and Irish people. God has made his will for humans to be of different colour and beliefs. He wanted those people to come to know each other and to help each other. Religion has taught us that society should give mercy to the young people and honour to the old people. The old people in Connolly hospital were certainly honoured by Doaa and her friends. Most of the money will be used to provide parasols and tables for the gardens at two of the units for older patients in the hospital while according to Rosemary Orr from the hospital’s health promotion unit, the balance will be put towards an outing for the patients. Speaking
to Community Voice after presenting the cheque, Doaa
said “we were delighted to be active in the local area. We make
use of the various services in Dublin 15, including the hospital, and
we want to be able to make our contribution to the community.”
