The secretary general of the Department of Education & Science was the very special guest at the recent Intercultural Day held in Dublin 15’s Ireland’s first ever community national school, Scoil Choilm in Blanchardstown Village.Parents and pupils at the Scoil Choilm Intercultural Day

“We organised the day to celebrate the many cultures in Scoil Choilm and the fact that the children are also Irish boys and girls and proud to be part of our new school,” said principal Treasa Lowe.

As well as a concert for parents the school also staged an exhibition. “The children engaged in arts and crafts and worked on themes from the different continents such as prints from Africa and kites from Asia. They also brought in photos from their home countries showing their families and friends back home,” said Treasa. “Some of the parents also brought in arts and crafts from their own countries and some made posters about their previous lives there.

“It was a big learning experience for everyone and being proud of who we are and our own cultures. However now their home is in Ireland and they are a part of Irish society,” she said.

Parents brought in food from their own countries for the event. “We have 27 nationalities in the school so we had food from all over the world. It was a wonderful meal,” said Treasa.

There was a large attendance to see Bridget McManus, Secretary General of the Department of Education officially open the school’s new playground. This attendance included parents and extended families and in one case two grandparents who had travelled from Latvia to be present on the day.

Ian Murphy, chairman of the board of management spoke of the great achievement of getting Scoil Choilm up and running in such a short space of time.

“Our new building in Porterstown will be ready in September and already the children are well settled and parents have formed such a strong community around the school.”
