Corduff
presented with Tommy Murdiff Cup
After a season in which the club made significant progress, Corduff
FC was recently presented with the Tommy Murdiff memorial trophy. The
trophy is in recognition of the underdog or the club outside of any
top division in the country who gets the furthest in any one year in
the FAI junior national cup.
There have been four such winners since the inauguration of this FAI
sponsored trophy. Bellurgan FC (Louth), Dublin Bus (Dublin LSL), Wembley
Rovers (Limerick Premier) and now Corduff FC (AUL Premier A). Corduff
were the first of the four to reach the semi final stage or round 9
with the previous three reaching the Quarter-Final stage.
Tommy Murdiff was a journalist for Independent newspapers and particularly
the Evening Herald where he wrote a section for junior soccer called
“Murdiff on Monday”. He was one of the best known junior
soccer journalists of his time and was known for the Murdiff Jinx, whereby
it seemed that placing his bet on one club would instantly lead to that
club being knocked out in the following round.
Tommy Murdiff died prematurely in 2004. The trophy was presented by
Tommy’s widow Ruth and son Dave, while also in attendance were
some members of the Corduff committee, team and support. Also there
to present the cup was Denis Cruise, the FAI junior secretary who will
travel to Austria this week as Ireland’s Euro 2008 match observer.
