| Castleknock Educate Together athletes bring home the laurels A
tense head to head for the final race day of Fingal’s first Primary
School Athletics League was held in Morton Stadium, Santry on Thursday
22nd May 2008. With over 300 students, representing ten schools taking
part, each school participated valiantly and created an unforgettable
atmosphere throughout the venue. On the day, however, it was Castleknock
Educate Together N.S that edged out the competition to win the coveted
prize of the best overall school and crown a great year for the school
in which it also celebrated its official opening. 2008 saw the introduction of the first ever county wide Cross-Country league in primary school athletics. This league was organised in partnership with Athletics Ireland and Fingal County Council’s Sports Section. Initially the programme was split into two separate leagues, based in Dublin 15 and North Fingal. The children participated in three race meets. As a reward for the hard work by students and teachers alike, a final race Day was organised for all the participating schools. Vincent Foley, Sports Development officer for Fingal County Council, was eager to point out that “this programme was aimed at creating a fun environment for children to become physically active. It is important that at this stage of a child’s sporting development that the emphasis should be on participation and learning fundamental skills – with emphasis on the ‘fun’ -, rather than competition and elitism. I have to give special thanks to Bart Rodgers from Athletics Ireland who worked tirelessly on the project and coached the children at every opportunity.” With the continued support from the schools, Athletics Ireland and Fingal County Council we are sure to see Athletics Flourish in the coming years in County Fingal.
