| Castleknock girls footballers win local derby The
Castleknock under-10 girls’ team was in flying form when they
had a good win over local rivals St. Brigid’s. The game was played
on a glorious sunny afternoon and the standard of play reflected the
good weather. The Castleknock team has been doing very well and this game was to be no different. Tow goals from Ciara Murray and another from Claire Nulty had them off to a great start. The midfield pairing of Emer Mullins and Aoife Whelan as well as the half back trio of Lauren Carr, Mairéad Mc Carthy and Ellie Mc Donough let little past and gave the forwards a good supply or ball with which to operate. From a long ball by Emer Mullins, Ciara Murray took possession to bag a hat-trick for herself and Castleknock to give them an unassailable lead even before half-time. Mairéad Griffin then betrayed her Mayo footballing heritage by neatly slotting over an excellent point from a free twenty yards out to increase the lead. A very competitive and gallant St. Brigid’s stuck to their task despite these set-backs and got just reward with two fine points before half-time. The heat of the day and first-half exertions took their toll on the pace of the game but the energetic Mary Jolley was rewarded for her tremendous efforts throughout the game when she scored another goal for Castleknock. Ashling Andrews displayed great skill at catching and kicking the ball and equally deserved the goal she scored. Not to be outdone, St. Brigid’s raided downfield once more and landed another fine point but it was Mairéad Griffin again, very industrious throughout, who finished off the scoring when she found the back of the net moments before the final whistle. In the end the day was Castleknock’s but enormous credit goes to both teams for a great performance on an energy-sapping day This unbeaten Castleknock under-10 girls team will play their crucial league decider against St. Marks at Porterstown Park Saturday 14th June at 5pm and a victory will seal the league title for these girls in their first competitive season.
